Course Advancement

Purpose:  The purpose of the Advancement Program is to allow students the opportunity to challenge themselves  by enrolling in courses outside the SRVUSD (Non-District Course) and advance to higher course levels within the SRVUSD.

How early can a student start?

  • 8th grade students who are currently enrolled in accelerated algebra 1 or geometry can begin taking courses in the spring of their 8th grade year.  It is important to note that 8th graders who are currently enrolled in California State Standards 8 math CANNOT advance through Biology over the summer as Algebra 1 is a prerequisite for any kind of Chemistry class (college prep or Honors) and they will not have met that requirement. Additionally, Algebra 1 must be taken at an SRVUSD school and cannot be taken via a summer course.

What are the requirements?

  • See the Advancement form on the below link.  The Advancement Form must be completed and approved by the Counseling Department prior to enrollment in the Out-of-District Course.

What courses can I use?

  • Institutions used for summer Advancement must be both WASC and UC approved.     Please note this quote from the UC web site stating that, “UC will not accept any on-line courses in the areas of visual and performing arts (VPA) or laboratory science, unless science courses require an on-site wet lab component”.
  • Please note: SRVUSD and MVHS does not guarantee that courses taken at these institutions adhere to the California State Standards curriculum or that students will pass the advancement exam.  Check with each institution to verify California State Standards alignment.

Will the course be added to the Monte Vista transcript?

  • Courses completed outside of SRVUSD are not placed on the student’s high school transcript unless they are a function of the student’s six-class program or a remediation to fulfill graduation requirements.  It is the student’s responsibility to request a transcript from the institution when applying to colleges.

Will the course count towards the graduation requirements?

  • Students must complete SRVUSD graduation requirements through their high school.  Algebra I must be completed within the district.

Note:  Students who are considering advancement must meet the advancement policy grade requirements as well as the SRVUSD pre requisites for the higher level course.  Last, space into the course they wish to advance into is not guaranteed.

Students who take a Geometry Course over the summer, in order to advance to Algebra 2, must provide an official transcript with a grade of B- or higher from an accredited.  No additional assessment will be given for this course only.  Please see the link below for other requirements and deadlines.

Important Changes to the SRVUSD Course Advancement Program for 2017!!

SRVUSD recognizes that some students are interested in advancing in the areas of math, science, world language, and/or college preparatory electives so we have devised a program to help facilitate the process.  Registration for Summer Advancement is a multi -step process as outlined below.  All steps must be completed by the deadlines listed. Failure to meet any deadline will result in the student being placed on the waitlist for the math assessment exam (if applicable) and/or the desired course for 2017-2018.

Here is an overview of the process. Click here for step-by-step instructions on the Enrollment & Transcript submission process.

STEP 1 - SUBMIT SRVUSD COURSE ADVANCEMENT APPLICATION:

  • Click HERE to be taken to the Advancement application. Deadline for submission is June 2, 2017
  • SRVUSD accepts only one course per subject area, per school year.
  • Please submit only one application per course, per student.  Duplicate entries are NOT necessary!

STEP 2 - ENROLL IN CLASS(ES) AT CHOSEN INSTITUTION

  • Enrollment must be completed by June 30, 2017.
  • Click here for a list of possible institutions and courses.  SRVUSD does not favor one institution/course over the other, nor do we guarantee that these courses adhere to the State of California standards, or that students will pass the placement exam (if applicable). This is only a partial list of institutions that can be used for Advancement; those listed tend to be the most commonly used.  Institutions used for Advancement must be both WASC accredited and approved by the UCs. Check with each institution to verify California State Standards alignment.

  • If you have questions about specific institutions/courses, check with your high school counselor.

STEP 3 - NEW REQUIREMENT THIS YEAR -  PROVIDE PROOF OF ENROLLMENT:

  • For each course a student is applying to advance through, a Proof of Enrollment must be provided by June 30, 2017.
